It’s quite widely-known that music is an effective tool for improving mental health. Most of us can say, from personal experience, that we’ve noticed this in one form or another. So, let’s look at some of the most compelling reasons to use music as a tool for mental wellness (and you don’t need to be the next Beethoven to benefit!).
How music can help
1. Music can lift your mood. As we touched on, music can really help boost your mood. Think back to your favourite concert experience, or the type of music you listen to while exercising. Chances are that you’ve already witnessed the mood-boosting properties of music! So, find music that makes you feel good—something that lifts you up and inspires you (bonus points if it makes you want to get up and dance!).
2. Music can be relaxing. On the other hand, while some music (like rock or salsa) can lift your spirits, others may help you calm down. Genres like classical music or folk can be really soothing to many people. Find some music that helps you relax—it will definitely be different for everybody.
And Kendra Cherry writes, “The psychological effects of music can be powerful and wide-ranging. Music therapy is an intervention sometimes utilized to promote emotional health, help patients cope with stress, and boost psychological well-being.” Sounds pretty great, huh?
3. Music can act as a way to socialize. In terms of playing musical instruments, this can be a great opportunity to get out there and meet new people. Whether you join a small band with friends, or sign up for a music class at school, playing music can be a super fun social experience. It teaches you to work with others to create something beautiful! This sense of connection is awesome for your overall well-being.
4. Music is a great creative outlet. If you play music, it can be an effective way to cope with life. Oftentimes we can get overwhelmed and feel upset—and when things get difficult, it’s nice to have a creative outlet for your feelings. Whether you’re learning a new song or even writing your own music, the process of being creative is immensely useful. Just as other types of art, like writing or painting, can be therapeutic to practice, so is music!
There are lots of great reasons to use music for your mental wellness. Whether you listen to soothing classical music to relax before bed or play music to help yourself feel better, find the one that’s true for you!
